What are the most popular keyboard character sets? There are several layouts for typewriters and computers. Two most popular layouts are AZERTY for the French and QWERTY for Anglo-Saxon users. These names correspond to the first six keys in the top line. The type of the English keyboard QWERTY is world widely spread. These character sets are not rational and were invented in America at the end of the 1860-s' years as a way to slow down the typing process. The inventor Christopher Sholes had created a character set QWERTY, placing frequently used letters so, that the typists print slower. An idea to slow down typing speed had arisen to prevent the frequent blocking of typewriters, as the secretaries went too fast. Subsequent generations of the typists learned to type with the QWERTY. Therefore manufacturers did not change this basic character set. The keyboard of the computer also has copied a layout QWERTY. However, there are more rational character sets, as, for example, Dvorak layout (an American professor of statistics). This alternative key set was created in the1930-s. Yet it is not widely used, but is already recognized because of its higher speed advantage. Dvorak key set was created so that a typist’s fingers would easily print the most frequently used letters and combinations of the letters. As to positioning of functional, numerical and other keys on the keyboard there is no existing standard. |
